Handmade Christmas decorations come to life.
I wanted the art direction to feel like the characters and backgrounds had been cut out of paper, reminiscent of home-made Christmas decorations. Each character should feel completely unique to one another, whilst still feeling like a comfortable inhabitant of the wider Wintercity line-up. As the earliest characters took shape, a sort of informal style sheet developed. The face for example, always follows the same basic structure; or the shape of the arms remaining completely consistent across all characters.
Wintercity itself follows the same principles, with all elements designed in a way that made them feel like they could realistically have been fashioned from paper.
After I had designed the characters and world, Javier Colsa brought the whole thing to life with his motion design, imbuing each character with the spark of real personality. The animation style reflects my Christmas decorations idea, with the individual pieces of paper moving with simple joints, somewhat like a puppet.
